About
Darren Black
In 1977, as a small wide-eyed child, I was taken to see Star Wars. I was captivated by its majesty, inspired by its heroism and secretly proud that Darth Vader was a West Country lad just like myself (it’s true! Google it). Leaving the cinema, it hit me like a bolt of lightning. I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up... I was going to become… a Jedi!
Hmmmm. Well. That hasn’t happened quite yet but I did become an actor. I trained. I observed people. I learnt the behaviours that dictate why we do what we do. I studied the intricacies of human emotions. I delved into what makes us all tick. I worked in theatre, television and film, and loved every moment of it! Like most actors, I also developed my understanding of people through part-time jobs. I worked at a telemarketing company, on the phones, front-end dealing with people. Influencing, selling an idea, listening intently to what people had to say, reassuring, interpreting, and calming. I worked in hospitality, the charity sector, corporate training. I met people from a wide range of diverse backgrounds and experienced their lives and heard their stories.

As I became more fascinated by human behaviour, I became more focused on teaching aspiring actors, and in 2017 I moved into a position as an acting teacher at the University of Chichester Conservatoire. Working on an Acting for Film degree course I developed my own approach to actor training. Inhabiting truthful behaviour lies at the core of that training. Since then I've also taught at East 15 Drama school, and other institutions and classes around the world.

This wealth of experience also ignited my passion for writing. I started to create stories for film and television. To date seven of my scripts have been made into short films, and I've directed five of them. They span a range of genres from Comedy and Drama, to Rom Com and Psychological Horror. In August 2024 I wrote and directed my first International short which was shot in Finland. Three of my films are presently being submitted for film festivals in 2025.

And now I'm bringing all that experience to coaching actors. Having spent time in Los Angeles I've seen how great actor training can happen on an ongoing basis, allowing students to both audition and support themselves in other jobs whilst studying their craft. I've seen how this helps them to stay fresh and connected to their art. I've become more aware of how beneficial that approach is to aspiring actors. Certainly in the UK, many students study full-time for 3 years, amass tens of thousands of pounds of debt, but then struggle to find good, ongoing classes to keep developing their skills. Like any skill, if you don't keep working at it you become rusty very quickly. I think this is a major reason why so many actors in the UK struggle to build their creative networks and secure work. My aim is to offer that ongoing support. Whether it's refresher classes, or starting from scratch, camera performance or theatre, audition or casting prep, I'm here to support actors; to help them develop and stay fresh through regular coaching and classes.
